Program Summary

The 2st BCME Workshop in Medical Education was successfully conducted from 18, 19 & 20, December 2023, in alignment with NMC guidelines and under the mentorship of the regional centre, MMC Chennai. The program was well-structured with theory, hands-on sessions, group tasks, and interactive discussions.

The event began with registration and an ice-breaking session that helped foster group dynamics. Participants were introduced to adult learning principles, domains of learning, and the systems approach to medical education. Sessions on goals, roles, competencies, and learning objectives (LOs) under the CBME framework provided the foundational understanding of outcome-based education.

Participants gained deep insights into interactive large and small group teaching methods, competency-based assessment, internal assessment design, and formative assessment principles. Sessions on AETCOM, self-directed learning (SDL), and lesson planning were conducted with practical examples and group activities.

An entire day was devoted to skills teaching, including effective clinical instruction, skill lab utilization, and workplace-based assessment methods like Mini-CEX, DOPS, and OSCE/OSPE. Emphasis was laid on aligning teaching-learning methods (TLMs) and assessment strategies with competencies. Tools such as blueprinting, MCQ writing, essay and short-answer construction, and assessment mapping were covered in depth.

The program concluded with sessions on mentoring, academic growth opportunities, and drafting a phase-based teaching schedule. A post-test and retro-pre feedback analysis showed significant learning gains among participants.
