National Eye Donation Fortnight Inaugurated at Narayana Medical College at Louis Pasture’s Gallery at 10.30.AM
The Department of Ophthalmology, Narayana Medical College, in collaboration with NSS, inaugurated the
National Eye Donation Fortnight with grandeur.
Chief Guest – Dr. P. Sreenivasulu Reddy, Dean, Narayana Medical Institutions – lit the ceremonial lamp and inaugurated the program. In his address, he stated that in India, around 1.2–1.3 million people suffer from corneal blindness, with nearly 40,000 new cases every year. Currently, about 50,000 eyes are collected annually, but only 50% are utilized. Hence, awareness is very essential. As part of the fortnight, several awareness activities are being organized, including today’s student rally.
Dr. Vijayalakshmi, HOD – Ophthalmology, said that National Eye Donation Fortnight has been observed since
1985 (Aug 25 – Sept 8) every year. The main aim is to spread awareness on who can donate eyes, how to donate, whom to contact, and to remove myths about eye donation. She urged medical students to educate at least 10 people each along with their family members.
Dr. R. Harish, Additional Medical Superintendent, Narayana Hospital, informed that those willing to donate eyes may contact Narayana Medical College & Hospital Helpline – 9037104108.
The program was also attended by Dr. Karthik (NSS Program Officer), Mr. A.C. Sekhar Reddy (AGM), Prof. V. Pratima (Nursing College), doctors, medical students, nursing faculty and staff.
