One the eve of WORLD DIABETES DAY 2021, a diabetes awareness campaign was organised under the guidance of Dr T Sunanda MD DM Associate Professor, Endocrinologist, Department of Endocrinology at Narayana Medical college and hospital on November 15.
It was inaugurated and presided by Narayana Educational Society Executive Director Mrs Ponguru Ramadevi, this campaign signifies unity of global diabetes community in response to increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus.
With around 10% of Indian population being diabetic or prediabetes and with increasing prevalence every single day, India is poised to overtake China in terms of being DIABETIC CAPITAL OF WORLD, hence an awareness on diet and exercise becomes of utmost importance along with medicine to people.
The prevalence of diabetes is in uptrend in South India where people predominantly consume a RICE BASED diet and underestimate the importance of physical activity in prevention of control of diabetes.
As a part of this campaign patient were screened for BODY MASS INDEX, FASTING SUGAR LEVELS, LIPID PROFILE AND BLOOD PRESSURE, each patient was educated on diabetic diet with live display of food items which help in managing blood sugar level and also foods to avoid, as diet play a intrinsic role not only in managing sugar levels but also in prevention of frequent spikes in blood sugar levels. Patients were also educated on insulin administration techniques, complication of untreated and uncontrolled sugars and diabetic foot care practices.
Patients was given a diabetic diet chart along with DIABETIC DIET Kit to encourage healthy eating habits.
We at Narayana Medical college and hospital on this WORLD DIABETES DAY 2021 – THEME: “ACCESS TO DIABETES CARE – IF NOT NOW THEN WHEN? “helped people to get screened, educated them on making changes in diet, follow a physical activity regime and keep their sugars under control to avoid complication and lead a healthy life.
