A Brief Report of the Proceedings of the Workshop on Methodology of Evaluation.           
                 Department of Medical Education, Narayana Medical College, Nellore, organized a Faculty Development Programme on 05 Dec, 2014.   A Workshop on Methodology of Evaluation was organized, at the Dept of Medical Education from 9 am to 2 pm.

The following dignitaries graced the occasion as special visitors.

  1. Dr. Ravi Raj, Vice-chancellor of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences,
  2. Dr. Shantha Rao, Director of Medical Education of Andhra Pradesh,
  3. Sri. Panduranga Rao, Retd. Justice of High Court of A.P., Chairman, High Power Committee.

The following in-house faculty conducted the workshop.

  1. Dr.V.Chandrasekhar, Coordinator of Medical Education Unit,

Professor & Head of Community Medicine,

  1. Dr.B.V. Subrahmanyam, Professor & Head of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology,
  2. Dr. Amit Agrawal, Professor & Head of Neuro-Surgery.

              The participants were about 40 senior faculty members like Professors and Associate Professors of all departments of the medical college. A few junior faculty and teaching staff also attended as observers. 
After a formal prayer, Dr. G.V. Nagi Reddy, Principal, Narayana Medical College, briefly described the importance of Evaluation and encouraged the group to participate actively, and to make recommendations for onward transmission to the Dr.NTR University of Health Sciences
Dr. V. Chandrasekhar discussed the importance of evaluation, principles underlying the process of evaluation, formative and summative evaluations, etc, in the opening session.
This was followed by Dr. Subrahmanyam, who discussed the various nuances of Mutiple Choice Questions.  He focused on the construction, types, advantages and disadvantages of the MCQ’s, in great detail.
In the third session of the day, Dr. Agrawal discussed about the Essay Questions.   He described the construction, structuring, modifying of the questions, in addition to the advantages and disadvantages.
In the fourth session Dr. Chandrasekhar discussed the pros and cons of Short Notes questions.  In the fifth session he focused on the other types of questions like Short Essays, Brief Answer questions etc.
Then, the group was divided randomly into four sub-groups, and the following tasks were given to them for group discussions.

  1. Group A – Essay Questions,
  2. Group B – Short Essay Questions,
  3. Group  C – Short Notes, and
  4. Group D – MCQ’s.

Each group was requested to discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of the type of question given to them and give a report of their work, with recommendations.
The groups actively discussed for one hour, and gave their reports along with their recommendations, which are sent to the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.

The above mentioned dignitaries visited the Department of Medical Education while the Workshop was going on.   They were very happy see the activity, and discussed at length, with the participants about the various aspects of Evaluation.

The Workshop came to end with a formal proposal of vote of thanks by Dr.Chandrasekhar.
