WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY AWARENESS PROGRAM

World Alzheimer’s Day 2014 was observed at Narayana medical college on 19th October during the world Alzheimer’s week. An awareness program was conducted in Narayana medical college on 19/9/2014from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. The program was organized jointly by the departments of psychiatry and neurology and the department of psychiatric nursing. The Director of Narayana Medical College presided over the occasion. The other dignitaries who graced the occasion were the principal of NMCH, The Medical Superintendent, The CEO super specialty hospital, The Administrator, the dean of nursing college, and the president of the Nellore walker’s association. The chief guest and the dignitaries spoke on the need to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s disease in the community among the general public.

Dr N.S Sampath Kumar Associate Professor of the department of Neurology conducted a presentation of “Overview of dementia”
Dr. Govindraj Asst. professor of Neurology department talked on “Etiology, Symptomatology and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease”.
 Dr K.Krishna Murthy professor and HOD, department of psychiatry gave a presentation on “Reversible Dementia and Pharmacological treatment modalities for Alzheimer’s disease”.
Miss. Sumiya, Post graduate in psychiatric nursing talked about the Nursing Management and “Caretaking strategy of Alzheimer’s disease”.
About 400 people including nursing students, undergraduates, general public attended the meeting
40 Medical undergraduates 60 nursing students participated enthusiastically in the essay writing competition held in this connection. Participants were given certificates and prizes to best
 A poster presentation competition was conducted for nursing students on the day of the program.
An informative and entertaining skit was performed by the nursing students which showed the “symptoms and care that should be given to a patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease”.
 Among the audience, were also patients who were suffering from dementia along with their caretakers.
